"Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world."
— Joel A. Barker
Each of us is born with a vision—an inner knowing of who we’re meant to be and what we’re here to create.
Think back to your childhood. Remember how limitless your imagination was? You didn’t just dream—you became your dreams. I personally wanted to be a cartoonist, a doctor, an astronaut… even a superhero (and yes, at five years old, I was Batman).
These childhood visions weren’t just whimsical fantasies. They were clues—guiding us toward the path of expressing our unique gifts and making our mark on the world. This gift isn’t reserved for a select few. It’s in all of us.
So, if these visions are embedded in our hearts, why do so many of us allow them to fade? Why do they become distant dreams instead of powerful realities?
For me, one dream stuck: becoming a martial arts instructor.
I still have the “autobiography” I wrote in 5th grade. In it, right after describing smashing birthday cake on my head at age one and visiting Disneyland at age five, I wrote:
"When I was 10 years old, I began my Taekwondo training. I am now a Blue Belt and one day I want to own my own school."
That dream became reality 22 years later, when I founded the Family Martial Arts Center—a school I proudly led for 17 years. Now, 30 since its inception, it is still one of the most meaningful and transformative chapters of my life. I was living with purpose, and that purpose shaped the leader I’ve become today.
But here’s the truth: it almost didn’t happen.
Despite my passion, I nearly walked away from the vision. Fear, disguised as "being responsible," told me to keep my corporate job. Even after signing the lease on the space that would become my school, I considered backing out.
It was only when I chose to trust my heart—and take bold action—that everything changed. And now, I help others do the same.
Over the years, I’ve distilled what I’ve learned—both from my journey and from coaching others—into a five-step process to move from fear to fruition:
1. Get Clear on What You REALLY Want
Stop settling for vague hopes. Allow yourself to imagine your vision vividly and fully. Don’t shrink it to avoid disappointment. If it’s in your heart, it’s there for a reason.
2. Discover Your Big WHY
Your vision needs fuel. When the journey gets hard—and it will—your “why” becomes the fire that keeps you going. Purpose drives perseverance.
3. Feel the Cost of Inaction
Ask yourself: What will it cost me if I don’t do this? Sometimes, a glimpse of the pain of regret is the jolt we need to move forward.
4. Ask for Help
You were never meant to do this alone. The mentors, guides, and supporters you need are already around you—just waiting to be asked. Asking for help isn’t weakness; it’s wisdom.
5. Step into Who You Must BECOME
What traits will you need to embrace—courage, confidence, vulnerability?
What consistent actions will move you forward, even if small?
What will your life look like when you fully embody your vision?
Dreams don’t arrive fully formed. They are built step by step, from the inside out.
Hospice workers often share a haunting truth: the deepest regrets of the dying aren’t about the mistakes they made—but the dreams they never pursued.
What vision is whispering inside of you? What’s the next action you’ll take to honor it?
