Why Great Leaders Speak Up

Aug 04, 2026

There’s a common misconception about leadership that keeps far too many talented people on the sidelines.

It’s the belief that confidence comes first.

That before you raise your hand, speak in the meeting, share your idea, or step onto the stage, you’re supposed to feel completely prepared.

But that’s not how great leaders are made.

In fact, some of the most influential leaders in history admitted they felt uncertain, nervous, or even afraid before stepping into pivotal moments. What separated them from everyone else wasn’t the absence of fear—it was their willingness to act despite it.

That’s the essence of courageous leadership.

Confidence Is the Result—Not the Starting Point

Throughout my career as an 8th Degree Black Belt, keynote speaker, and leadership coach, I’ve watched thousands of people confront something they believed they couldn’t do.

One of the most powerful moments during my Board Breaking Experience happens just before someone strikes the board.

They look at it.

They hesitate.

Their mind begins creating stories.

"What if I can't?"

"What if I embarrass myself?"

"What if everyone is watching me fail?"

The board isn’t what they’re really fighting.

They’re fighting the conversation happening inside their own mind.

Leadership works exactly the same way.

Whether you're presenting to your executive team, leading your organization through change, or speaking to an audience for the very first time, the greatest obstacle usually isn't external.

It's internal.

And that’s why leadership communication begins long before you ever open your mouth.

It begins with the story you choose to believe about yourself.

Your Voice Is a Leadership Tool

Many people think of communication as a skill.

I believe it’s much more than that.

Your voice is one of your greatest leadership tools.

Ideas don't create change until they're shared.

Vision doesn't inspire people until it's communicated.

And opportunities often remain hidden because someone never found the courage to speak.

The world doesn't need more perfect communicators.

It needs more authentic ones.

When leaders speak with honesty, humility, and conviction, people respond—not because every word is flawless, but because authenticity builds trust.

That’s why developing strong leadership communication isn't about becoming someone else.

It's about becoming more fully yourself.

Public Speaking Confidence Is Built Through Action

One of the questions I hear most often is:

"How do I become more confident speaking in front of people?"

My answer surprises many people.

You don't wait until you're confident to speak.

You become confident because you speak.

Every conversation.

Every presentation.

Every difficult discussion.

Every podcast interview.

Every keynote.

Each one becomes another repetition that strengthens your confidence muscle.

Think back to learning any new skill.

Whether it was riding a bicycle, learning a musical instrument, or practicing a sport, confidence didn't arrive before you started.

It grew because you kept showing up.

The same is true for public speaking confidence.

Progress beats perfection every time.

Leadership Requires Courage Before Certainty

One of the greatest myths in leadership is that great leaders always know exactly what to do.

The truth?

Most leaders simply make the best decision they can with the information they have available.

They aren't waiting for certainty.

They're willing to move forward with clarity of purpose.

That's the heart of a healthy leadership mindset.

Instead of asking:

"Am I ready?"

Great leaders ask:

"What does this moment require from me?"

That subtle shift changes everything.

Your focus moves away from yourself and toward those you serve.

And service has a remarkable way of quieting fear.

The Champion's Choice

When I was a young martial artist, my instructor looked at me one day and said something that would change my life forever:

"I will make you a champion."

At the time, I thought he was talking about winning tournaments.

Years later, I realized he was talking about something much deeper.

Champions aren't defined by trophies.

They're defined by the choices they make when fear shows up.

Every day, we all face moments when we can remain silent or choose to step forward.

We can wait until we feel ready.

Or we can recognize that readiness often arrives after we begin.

That is where breakthroughs happen.

Your Next Leadership Step

If you've been waiting until you feel completely confident before sharing your ideas, leading your team, or stepping into a bigger opportunity, consider this:

The confidence you're looking for may be waiting on the other side of the conversation you're avoiding.

Your voice doesn't have to be perfect.

It simply needs to be heard.

Because every time you choose courage over comfort, you strengthen your leadership mindset, improve your leadership communication, build lasting confidence, develop authentic public speaking confidence, and demonstrate the kind of courageous leadership that inspires others to do the same.

So this week, don't wait until you feel ready.

Take the next step.

Raise your hand.

Share your idea.

Lead the meeting.

Start the conversation.

Because great leaders rarely begin with certainty.

They begin with courage.

Ready for Your Own Breakthrough?

If this message resonated with you, perhaps you've realized that the conversation you've been avoiding isn't just with someone else...

It's with yourself.

Maybe you've been waiting for the right time.

The right opportunity.

Or the confidence to finally take the next step.

Here's what I've learned after decades of coaching leaders and high performers:

Real breakthroughs rarely happen because we simply become more inspired.

They happen because we choose to take action.

That's why I've opened enrollment for The Breaking Through Experience™, a six-week transformational coaching journey beginning September 16.

Together, we'll identify what's holding you back, develop the mindset and habits of lasting change, and help you become the leader you were created to be.

If you're ready to move beyond inspiration and create your own breakthrough, I'd love to invite you to learn more.
