Remember to Forgive to Move Forward

Apr 21, 2026

There is a lesson I have learned repeatedly — both on the martial arts mat and in leadership:

You cannot move forward while carrying the weight of what’s behind you.

Yet so many high-performing leaders attempt to do exactly that.

They push harder.
Work longer.
Stay busy.

But beneath the productivity is unresolved frustration… lingering resentment… or regret they simply haven’t released.

And over time, that emotional weight becomes leadership drag.

Because here’s the truth:

Forgiveness is not weakness.
Forgiveness is strength in motion.

Forgiveness Is About Freedom — Not Approval

Let’s clarify something immediately.

Forgiveness does not mean:

  • What happened was acceptable
  • The hurt didn’t matter
  • You should forget the lesson
  • Trust must automatically be restored

Forgiveness is not about the other person.

It’s about freeing yourself.

When we refuse to forgive, we stay emotionally tethered to the moment that wounded us. We replay the conversation. Rehearse what we wish we had said. Carry the tension into new relationships.

And whether we realize it or not — people can feel it.

It shows up in our leadership as guardedness.
In our communication as impatience.
In our culture as distance.

But when we release it?

Our energy changes.
Our presence softens.
Our leadership expands.

The Martial Arts Lesson Most People Miss

In martial arts training, one of the first disciplines we learn is this:

Stay in the present moment.

If a student keeps thinking about the punch they missed or the mistake they just made, they become distracted — and vulnerable.

We don’t train while clinging to the last round.

We reset.
We refocus.
We re-engage.

Leadership requires that same discipline.

Because if you stay stuck in yesterday’s disappointment, you miss today’s opportunity.

And breakthrough leaders don’t live in emotional backlog.

They travel light.

Sometimes the Person You Need to Forgive Is… You

This is the part many leaders resist.

We talk often about forgiving others — but rarely about self-forgiveness.

Yet I see it all the time in executives, entrepreneurs, educators, and high achievers.

They quietly carry:

  • A decision they regret
  • A risk they didn’t take
  • A failure they replay
  • A moment they believe they “should have handled better”

So let me remind you of something important:

You are not your worst moment.
You are not your past.

Leadership is not about perfection.

It is about growth.

And growth requires compassion — including toward yourself.

If you wouldn’t hold a team member hostage to one mistake… why are you doing it to yourself?

At some point, strong leaders make a powerful choice:

👉 They extract the lesson.
👉 They release the shame.
👉 They move forward wiser — not heavier.

Unforgiveness Is Expensive

Holding onto resentment doesn’t just affect your mindset.

It costs you:

  • Emotional energy
  • Mental clarity
  • Creativity
  • Trust
  • Leadership presence

In contrast, forgiveness creates space.

Space for new ideas.
Space for healthier relationships.
Space for the future you are meant to lead.

Because breakthrough isn’t just about effort.

Sometimes it’s about release.

A Leadership Reflection

Ask yourself honestly:

  • Who do I need to forgive?
  • What disappointment am I still carrying?
  • Where is my past quietly shaping how I lead today?

You don’t have to announce it.
You don’t have to justify it.

But you do have to decide.

Is it time to set this down?

Forgiveness Is a Strategic Leadership Move

The strongest leaders I know understand something deeply:

Forgiveness is not emotional softness.

It is emotional maturity.

When leaders release resentment:

  • Communication improves
  • Trust rebuilds
  • Teams feel safer
  • Culture strengthens

And perhaps most importantly…

The leader becomes lighter — and more powerful.

Because nothing drains momentum like dragging the past into the future.

Your Breakthrough Might Be Waiting on the Other Side of Release

If you’ve been feeling stuck… heavy… or unusually resistant…

It may not be a strategy issue.

It may be an emotional one.

What you release today could become the very space your next breakthrough requires.

So this week, consider making a courageous leadership decision:

Forgive.
Release.
Rise.

Not because the past deserves it.

But because your future does.

Bring This Breakthrough to Your Audience

In my keynotes and Board Breaking Experiences, I help leaders and teams release what’s holding them back — mentally, emotionally, and culturally — so they can step forward with clarity and confidence.

Because when people let go of the past, they don’t just feel lighter…

They lead stronger. If you’re planning a leadership event, conference, or retreat and want your audience to experience a real breakthrough — not just hear about one — let’s connect.
