“If everything is important… nothing actually is.”
Let me ask you a question:
What truly matters to you right now?
Not what’s urgent.
Not what’s loud.
Not what just landed in your inbox.
Not what someone else has decided should be important to you.
What actually matters?
It sounds like a simple question. But for many of us—especially those of us who lead others—it can be surprisingly difficult to answer.
Why?
Because we are surrounded by demands for our attention.
Emails need responses. Meetings need to happen. Problems need to be solved. People need decisions. Deadlines need to be met.
Before long, our days become a continuous cycle of responding, reacting and managing.
We’re busy. We’re productive. We’re checking things off the list.
But are we actually moving forward?
That's why leadership clarity matters.
Effective leadership isn't simply about getting more done. It's about knowing what deserves your attention—and having the discipline to prioritize it.
The Difference Between Urgent and Important
One of the biggest traps we can fall into is confusing urgency with importance.
The urgent grabs your attention.
But what’s important deserves your intention.
Urgency says, “Deal with me now!”
Importance quietly asks, “Does this move me closer to the person I want to become, the relationships I want to nurture, the organization I want to build, or the impact I want to create?”
The problem is that important things rarely scream for our attention.
That meaningful conversation you've been putting off?
That dream you've wanted to pursue?
That relationship you want to strengthen?
That bigger vision for your life or leadership?
They can always wait until “someday.”
But here's what I've discovered:
“Someday” has a remarkable way of becoming “never” unless we intentionally make room for what matters.
Developing a strong leadership mindset means becoming intentional about the difference between what demands your attention and what genuinely deserves it.
Focus Determines Power
In martial arts, focus is everything.
When I teach someone to break a board, their eyes focus. Their body aligns. Their energy moves in one direction.
Why?
Because scattered focus creates scattered power.
The same principle applies to leadership.
When our attention is scattered among dozens of competing priorities, our energy becomes scattered as well.
But when we're clear about our leadership priorities, something changes.
Decisions become easier.
Distractions become easier to identify.
Our energy becomes focused.
And instead of simply being busy, we begin creating meaningful movement.
Clarity creates focus.
Focus creates movement.
And movement creates momentum.
Does Your Calendar Reflect What You Say Matters?
Here's an exercise that can be incredibly revealing.
Think about what you would say matters most to you.
Your family? Your health? Growing your business? Developing your team? Deepening your spiritual life? Creating a greater impact?
Now take a look at your calendar from the past seven days.
Do the two match?
Because our priorities aren't only revealed by what we say matters.
They're revealed by where we consistently place our time, energy and attention.
That is one of the foundations of purpose-driven leadership: aligning what you do with what you say matters most.
Sometimes that realization can be uncomfortable.
But it can also be incredibly freeing.
You don't necessarily need to completely redesign your life.
You may simply need to realign it.
Reconnect Before You Redirect
As we begin this month's theme of Lead With Vision, it would be tempting to immediately ask:
Where am I going?
What's my big vision?
What do I want to create next?
Those are important questions.
But I believe there's one that needs to come first:
What matters most?
Because vision without purpose can send you racing toward a destination you never really wanted in the first place.
Before you decide where you're going, reconnect with why you're going there.
So, here's your challenge this week.
Find a few quiet minutes and ask yourself:
What matters most to me right now?
Then ask:
Does the way I'm spending my time reflect that?
If something is out of alignment, choose one action this week to bring it back into alignment.
One conversation.
One boundary.
One decision.
One courageous “no” to something less important so you can give a wholehearted “yes” to something that truly matters.
Because sometimes the next breakthrough doesn't require another idea.
👉 It requires a decision.
Great leadership isn't about doing everything.
It's about knowing what deserves your best.
The urgent will always compete for your attention.
Make sure what matters receives your intention.
Stay strong. Stay centered. And keep breaking through.
