Courage is a Muscle: Grow It Through Action

Oct 28, 2025

What if I told you that courage isn’t something you’re born with?

That it’s not reserved for warriors, CEOs, or mountaintop meditating monks…

But instead — it’s a muscle that you can build.
Right here. Right now.

And just like any muscle, it grows stronger through use, repetition, and challenge.

The Misconception of Courage

We often think of courage in cinematic terms:
💥 Charging into danger…
🎤 Giving a bold speech…
🛡️ Standing firm in the face of massive opposition…

But in real life, courage shows up in subtler — but no less powerful — ways.

It’s found in…

  • The quiet act of saying no when it would be easier to people-please.
  • The decision to ask for help when you’re usually the strong one.
  • The willingness to try something new and risk falling flat.
  • The vulnerability of speaking your truth when your voice shakes.

These moments aren’t always flashy.
But they’re transformational.

And every time you say “yes” to those moments — even when afraid — your courage grows.

Courage Isn’t the Absence of Fear

Here’s the truth:
If you’re waiting to be unafraid before you act, you’ll wait forever.

Courage doesn’t require the absence of fear.
It requires action in the presence of it.

Think of fear as your mind’s way of alerting you to risk.
But not all risks are dangerous — some are necessary for growth.

The moment you step into something new…
Launch that dream project…
Start that difficult conversation…

You’re not avoiding fear — you’re partnering with it.

And that’s the essence of courage.

Strength Through Reps

When I teach martial arts, I tell my students something simple:

“The technique doesn’t become yours until you’ve done it 1,000 times.”

The same is true for courage.

The first time you speak up in a meeting, it’s scary.
The fifth time, it’s still uncomfortable.
The tenth time? You begin to own it.

Courage becomes more accessible the more you practice it.

It’s not about taking reckless leaps — it’s about taking small, bold steps over and over again until confidence catches up.

Courage Expands Identity

One of the most beautiful things about courage is that it doesn’t just change your circumstances — it changes you.

Every act of courage, no matter how small, reshapes your identity.

You go from…

  • “Someone who avoids conflict” to “someone who sets boundaries.”
  • “Someone afraid to be seen” to “someone who shares their story.”
  • “Someone who waits” to “someone who initiates.”

Your actions tell your nervous system, “This is who I am now.”
And your identity expands to meet it.

Your Courage Challenge

So here’s your challenge this week:

🎯 Identify one bold action you’ve been putting off.

  • Maybe it’s making a phone call.
  • Maybe it’s launching something new.
  • Maybe it’s having a conversation you’ve been dreading.

Then… do it scared.

Do it even if you’re unsure.
Do it even if your knees are shaking.

Because the only way to build courage is to use it.

And once you do, you’ll notice something powerful:

You’re not just changing what you do.
You’re transforming who you are.

Closing Thoughts: Courage as a Breakthrough Practice

In a world that often celebrates control, perfection, and certainty — courage can feel counterintuitive.

But if you want to live a life that inspires…

If you want to lead in a way that elevates others…

If you want to break through what’s been holding you back…

You can’t think your way there.

You have to act.

Even when it’s messy.
Even when it’s scary.
Even when you’re not sure how it will turn out.

Because that’s how your courage muscle grows.

💥 And with each act of courage, your future opens just a little bit wider.

Let this be the week you stop waiting for the fear to pass —
And start practicing courage as a way of life.

Stay strong. Stay centered. Keep breaking through.
