No One Can Do It For You, But You Can't Do It Alone

Dec 09, 2024

“No one can do it for you, but you can’t do it alone.”

                                                       – People’s House, Denver, Colorado

This powerful mantra, originating from the world of drug and alcohol rehabilitation, holds deep resonance for me as an adult child of an alcoholic. But no matter what personal challenges you’ve faced in life, this statement carries a universal truth—one that’s not only important for overcoming addiction but also crucial for achieving success in every area of life.

We all encounter trials, don’t we? Moments when life seems to throw us curveballs we didn’t see coming. But as you take a step back, you’ll realize that many of these challenges are born from the choices we’ve made—our thoughts, actions, or beliefs.

While we may feel the urge to find someone to blame or wish for someone to come and rescue us, the reality is that we must take ownership of our journey if we want to move forward.

The Power of Ownership

When we take full responsibility for our lives and the challenges we face, that’s when the magic happens. We gain control. We gain clarity. And we unlock our true potential.

When you begin to own your path, even the toughest of times become opportunities for growth. In fact, if you look back at your life, I bet you’ll find that the moments you’re most proud of—the ones you share with others—aren’t the easy wins, but the hard-won battles.

It’s the moments when you overcame adversity, when you dug deeper than you thought possible, and emerged stronger on the other side.

These are the breakthroughs that shape who we are.

You Don’t Have to Do It Alone

Here’s the thing: while you must take ownership of your life’s journey, that doesn’t mean you have to do it alone.

During my early speaking career in Denver (thanks again to Joe Sabah for those opportunities), I had the privilege of sharing my message with various service organizations. One day, after a talk on overcoming challenges, a seasoned drug and alcohol counselor came up to me and shared a valuable insight. With over 25 years of experience, he said:

“Chris, I think you’re missing one key piece. You’ve got to remind people that it’s okay to ask for help. It’s one of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned in my career.”

That hit me like a ton of bricks. I had spent so many years trying to figure things out on my own, pushing through in silence, because I thought it made me stronger. But in that moment, I realized that strength doesn’t come from being alone—it comes from knowing when to ask for support.

Strength in Vulnerability

Later that day, I had an encounter that solidified this truth for me. An elderly man in his seventies, with an oxygen tank and breathing tubes, waited patiently in line to speak with me after my second presentation of the day. When he finally spoke, he said:

“All my life, I had everything—an incredible career, a beautiful family, success, and wealth. But then this happened,” he said, pointing to his oxygen tubes, “and I realized I had to ask for help.”

His words were powerful. How often had I struggled in my own life, refusing to ask for help because of pride, fear, or the belief that doing so would make me seem weak? But in that moment, I understood that real strength comes from vulnerability, from showing up as we truly are, imperfections and all.

Leadership Through Vulnerability

As leaders, we often feel that we need to have it all together. We think we need to be the ones with all the answers, solving every problem, showing the world that we’re strong and capable.

But in truth, true leadership comes from showing our humanity. By embracing both our strength and our vulnerability, we create deeper connections and inspire those around us.

As one of my mentors once said, “100% strength comes from 100% vulnerability.” And today, that couldn’t be more true.

So, this week, I challenge you to reflect on the challenges in your life. What would happen if you stopped pretending to have it all together? What if you embraced both your strength and your vulnerability? What if you allowed yourself to ask for help when needed?

This could be the turning point for you—a moment where everything changes. When you release the need to do it all alone, you open yourself up to greater empowerment, deeper connections, and more meaningful breakthroughs.
