Great Leaders Think Ahead

Sep 08, 2026

The Default: Leading From the Present

Most leaders operate from the present moment.

They respond to deadlines, demands, pressures and problems.

And while that's necessary, it can also become limiting.

Because when you only lead from the present…

👉 You become reactive.

Your decision-making becomes driven by urgency instead of intention.

And over time, those individual choices can create something you never consciously chose—a future that doesn't align with what you truly want.

The Shift: Leading From the Future

Visionary leadership requires something different.

It means anchoring today's decisions in the future you want to create.

Instead of only asking:

“What solves this right now?”

You also ask:

👉 “What moves me toward where I want to go?”

That's the essence of future-focused leadership—allowing tomorrow's vision to influence today's choices.

When you do that:

  • Your priorities become clearer
  • Your decisions become more strategic
  • Your actions become more aligned

And alignment creates momentum.

Martial Arts and Forward Focus

In martial arts, when breaking a board, we don't aim at the board.

👉 We aim beyond it.

Why?

Because if you focus only on the obstacle, you hesitate.

But when your focus and energy are directed beyond the obstacle…

You commit.

Leadership is no different.

If your focus remains exclusively on today's challenges, pressures and limitations, those circumstances begin determining your direction.

But when you focus on what's possible…

👉 You expand it.

Your current circumstances may influence your decisions.

They don't have to define your future.

Turn Your Leadership Vision Into a Filter

One of the most powerful practices in strategic leadership is using your vision as a filter.

Before making an important decision, ask:

👉 “Does this align with where I'm going?”

If it does—move forward.

If it doesn't—pause and reconsider.

This creates clarity.

And clarity reduces overwhelm.

Because every opportunity isn't necessarily the right opportunity.

Every request doesn't require a yes.

Every problem doesn't deserve the same amount of your energy.

A clear leadership vision helps you distinguish between what merely demands your attention and what deserves your commitment.

The Cost of Misalignment

When decisions become disconnected from vision, the impact builds over time.

Energy gets wasted.

Effort gets scattered.

Progress slows down.

Eventually, we can find ourselves feeling stuck—not because we aren't working hard, but because our actions aren't moving us toward what we say we want.

That's why vision isn't something you create once and put on a wall.

👉 Vision has to influence behavior.

Otherwise, it's simply an aspiration.

Vision Requires Discipline

It's easy to say you have a vision.

It's harder to live it.

Because future-focused leadership requires saying no to distractions, staying focused on priorities, and sometimes making decisions that are uncomfortable today because they serve something more important tomorrow.

That's discipline.

And discipline is what transforms vision into reality.

If you're reading this and realizing that you have a vision for something more—but you're struggling to turn that vision into consistent action—that awareness may be inviting you to make a different decision.

My six-week Breaking Through Experience, beginning September 16, is designed to help people clarify the breakthrough they want, recognize what's been holding them back, and create a practical path forward.

Sometimes we don't need a bigger vision.

👉 We need the courage and support to act on the one we already have.

The Leaders Who Shape the Future

The leaders who make the greatest impact aren't simply the ones who react best.

They're the ones who see further.

Who think longer-term.

Who act intentionally.

They don't just respond to the present.

👉 They build the future.

Your future isn't created by one monumental decision.

It's shaped by the small decisions you make every day.

So before your next important choice, ask:

“Does this move me closer to the future I want to create?”

Don't just lead from where you are.

👉 Lead from where you're going.

Stay strong. Stay centered. And keep breaking through.
