Are You Leading from Pressure… or from Purpose? - 7/15/25

Jul 15, 2025

Leadership is one of the most rewarding—and demanding—roles we can take on. Whether you're leading a team, a business, a family, or even just yourself, the way you approach leadership determines not only your results, but also your energy, your resilience, and your sense of fulfillment.

And that brings us to one of the most powerful questions I ask leaders during keynotes, retreats, and coaching sessions:

Are you leading from pressure… or from purpose?

It’s a question that cuts through the noise.
It reveals a truth many of us avoid.
And—most importantly—it opens the door to breakthrough.

Pressure-Based Leadership: The Silent Burnout Engine

Let’s be honest. Most of us have spent time leading from pressure.

Pressure to meet the deadline.
Pressure to keep up appearances.
Pressure to say “yes” even when we should say “no.”
Pressure to be everything to everyone.

When you lead from pressure, your decisions are reactive. They’re driven by urgency, fear, and often—by the expectations of others. You’re not in the driver’s seat… you’re just trying to keep the car from veering off the road.

And while this kind of leadership might produce short-term results, it also produces long-term exhaustion.

Pressure-based leadership feels heavy.
You’re tense.
You second-guess yourself.
And over time, your passion and clarity start to erode.

In fact, it’s a fast-track to burnout.

Purpose-Based Leadership: The Centered, Powerful Alternative

But what happens when you lead from purpose instead?

Everything shifts.

Purpose-based leadership is grounded. It’s intentional. It’s rooted in values, vision, and impact—not ego or urgency.

When you lead from purpose…

  • You say yes to what aligns—and no to what doesn’t.
  • You prioritize progress over perfection.
  • You make decisions not out of fear, but out of clarity.

One of my favorite authors, Dr. David Hawkins, beautifully illustrates this in his book Power vs. Force. He writes:

“Force is incomplete and requires constant justification. Power is total and requires nothing beyond itself.”

That quote reminds us that pressure is force—it pushes.
But purpose is power—it pulls. It attracts. It energizes.

A Quick Leadership Inventory

So how do you know which one is running your leadership right now?

Start with this brief self-assessment:

  • Where in your life are you leading from fear, stress, or control?
  • Where have you been saying yes out of obligation, not alignment?
  • Where are you pushing harder… instead of pausing to reconnect with what really matters?

Now flip the script:

  • What would leading from purpose look like in that same area?
  • What would it feel like to trust your inner compass?
  • What becomes possible when you stop leading to prove something, and start leading to build something?

Take a breath and sit with that.
Sometimes, one small realignment can spark a major breakthrough.

From Grind to Growth: The Real Path to Results

Here’s a truth I’ve seen over and over again:

Breakthrough doesn’t come from grinding harder.
It comes from realigning to what matters most.

In my Black Belt Leadership framework, one of the guiding principles is that we don’t achieve greatness by doing more… we achieve it by doing what’s essential, intentional, and purpose-driven.

When I lead my Board Breaking Experience workshops, I often watch as participants approach the board with tension and force. They're trying so hard that they tighten up. They hesitate. They miss.

But the ones who break through?

They’re focused, aligned, and relaxed. They breathe.
They don’t force the board.
They follow through with calm, confident power.

That’s what purpose-based leadership looks like in action.

This Week’s Challenge: Choose Purpose Over Pressure

So here’s your invitation this week:

✅ Take inventory of where you’re leading from pressure.
✅ Identify one area where you can shift into purpose.
✅ Make a conscious decision to realign.

You’ll be amazed what happens when you make that subtle—but powerful—adjustment.

Purpose brings clarity.
Purpose fuels energy.
Purpose sustains your leadership in a way pressure never can.

🎯 Lead from purpose—not pressure—and everything shifts.
